1950s Ambrosia Salad
Orange, coconut, and marshmallows in a sweet cream dressing: the mid-century fruit salad for holidays and church socials.
Context
Ambrosia began as simple orange and coconut; marshmallows and cream came later.
By the 1950s the salad was a refrigerator showpiece. Use canned mandarin oranges for the period look, or fresh oranges. Chill before serving so the coconut softens.
Ingredients
- 2 cups orange segments or drained mandarin oranges
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup pineapple tidbits, drained (optional)
- ½ cup sour cream or whipped cream
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Gently combine fruit, marshmallows, and coconut in a bowl.
- Fold in sour cream or whipped cream and sugar if using.
- Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Serve cold.
