Starching and Ironing: The Sad Iron Before Steam
How did people iron clothes before electric and steam irons existed?
A "sad iron" was not named for anyone's mood. "Sad" was an old word for solid or heavy, and the name fit: these were dense cast-iron blocks, typically five to nine pounds, heated directly on the stovetop, on a trivet set into the firebars of a range, or at the edge of an open fire. Because they lost heat quickly and scorched fabric if left too long in one spot, an ironing session meant working through several irons in rotation, reheating each one the moment it cooled.
That constant swapping created a real design problem, and a nineteen-year-old solved it. In 1871, Mary Florence Potts of Ottumwa, Iowa, received U.S. Patent No. 113,448 for a detachable wooden handle that could be locked onto any of several interchangeable iron bases. A housewife kept two or three bases heating on the stove while ironing with a fourth, unclipped the cooling one, and clipped the handle onto a hot base in seconds, all without ever touching bare metal. By 1894 the Montgomery Ward catalog was selling the set: three nickel-plated bases for seventy cents, a handle for fifteen cents, a stand for five. The wooden handle, cool to the touch while the iron underneath ran near scorching, was the invention's whole point.
The surface under the iron was its own unsolved problem for most of the century. Before a dedicated board existed, households ironed on a plank laid across two chair backs or on a folded blanket spread over a table, flat surfaces that worked poorly on anything with a curve. Sarah Boone, a Connecticut dressmaker, patented a fix in 1892: U.S. Patent No. 473,653 described a narrow, curved, reversible ironing board shaped to fit inside a sleeve or around a bodice seam, "particularly adapted to be used in ironing the sleeves and bodies of ladies' garments." It was a small, specific correction, aimed at exactly the kind of everyday friction a flat plank could never solve, and it came from someone who ironed for a living and felt the problem directly.
Judging that heat took practiced skill, and the methods sound alarming today. A 1915 laundering booklet distributed by Procter & Gamble gave the standard household test in plain terms: "A laundress's test for a hot iron is to hold it near her cheek for a few seconds. If too hot for this, it is too hot to use." A second method involved touching the iron's bottom with a wet finger and reading the hiss, "the shorter the hiss, the hotter the iron." Both tests were taught as ordinary household knowledge, not as anything unusual or risky, at a time when no thermostat existed to do this job instead.
Starching was its own separate skill, done before the iron ever came out. Households distinguished "cold" starch from boiled starch, and the choice depended on the fabric and the season. Eliza Leslie's Lady's Receipt-Book (1850) gives a typical cold-starch method for shirt collars and wristbands: dissolve raw starch thoroughly in cold water, add "a tea-spoonful of salt to prevent its sticking," then dip the collars and wristbands, squeeze them out, and let them sit before ironing. Leslie notes cold starch "will not do for thin muslin," which called for a thinner, boiled mixture instead, clapped evenly through the cloth by hand. Either way, starching happened while linens were still damp from washing, not as a separate later step.
Ironing itself followed a set order, meant to save motion and avoid ruining work already done. The Procter & Gamble booklet instructed ironing the parts that would wrinkle least last, doing ruffles and trim first, and following the fabric's long threads rather than working against them, "quickly with an iron hot, yet not hot enough to scorch." Clothes were dampened the night before, rolled and packed tightly in a basket, and ironed the next day while still slightly moist, since dry fabric held creases far worse than damp fabric did.
The labor involved is a large part of why ironing became its own fixed day in the classic weekly household schedule, following wash day rather than sharing it. Heating and reheating irons, testing each one by touch, and working through a full basket of dampened linens was not a task that fit alongside anything else.
