Line Drying and the Science Households Understood
Why did households hang washing in the sun, and what does science say now?
For most of history there was no clothes dryer, so laundry dried on a line in sun and wind. Households in Britain, the United States, and elsewhere noticed that sun-dried washing came out brighter, smelled fresh, and seemed cleaner. Wash day was planned around weather because a wet or still day meant laundry that would not dry properly. Sun-bleaching linens outdoors was a recognized whitening method long before packaged bleach. Indoor lines and airing cupboards covered damp climates and winter, but fair-weather outdoor drying remained the preferred finish when it was available.
Technique was part of the craft. Items were shaken out, hung with space between them, and brought in before evening damp returned. Whites and household linens took the brightest spots. Dyed goods sometimes went to shade or were turned inside out. Wooden pins and clean lines mattered because dirty gear left marks on freshly washed cloth.
Urban households adapted when yards were small. Pulleys ran lines between buildings. Roof spaces and courts held racks. In some cities, drying outdoors was restricted by soot: coal smoke could speckle wet whites, which is why careful households watched the wind and the chimneys as closely as the sun. Winter forced indoor airing, with laundry hung near stoves under watchful eyes because fabric and fire are a bad mix.
The preference for sun on linens was aesthetic and practical. White sheets and shirts were social signals of cleanliness. Sun-bleaching reduced reliance on harsh chemical bleaches that could weaken cloth. Households that could dry outdoors saved fuel and stove space as well.
Household manuals treated fair drying weather as a resource to seize. When the wind and sun aligned, extra loads went out. When they did not, ironing and mending schedules slipped. Laundry was always partly meteorology.
