Keeping a House Cool Before Air Conditioning

The design features and daily habits that kept homes bearable in summer heat, most of which still work.

Before mechanical air conditioning, households kept cool by working with the building and the daily cycle of heat rather than against them. They shut the house against the daytime sun and opened it to the cool of night, used shade and ventilation to move air, and relied on design features, high ceilings, shutters, porches, thick walls, that were built for the climate. The habits were deliberate and effective, and most of them still reduce indoor heat today with no energy at all.

The core insight was simple: keep the sun's heat out during the day, and let the cool air in when it arrives. Everything else follows from that.

How homes were built for heat

Older houses in hot climates were often designed to manage heat before anyone plugged anything in.

High ceilings let the hottest air rise above the level where people lived. Tall windows, transom windows over doors, and open floor plans encouraged air to move through the house. Porches and deep eaves shaded the walls and windows from direct sun while still allowing a breeze, and a shaded porch itself became a cooler place to sit or sleep in the hottest weather. Shutters and awnings blocked sun at the window, stopping heat before it entered. Thick masonry walls, where they were used, absorbed heat slowly and kept interiors cooler through the day. In many regions, cellars and lower floors stayed naturally cool and became summer refuges for both people and food.

These were not luxuries. They were practical responses to climate, refined over generations, and they explain why a well-built old house can stay surprisingly comfortable in heat.

The daily habits

Design set the stage, but the daily routine did much of the work, and it followed the sun.

The central practice was to close the house during the day and open it at night. In the morning, before the heat built, households shut windows, drew shades, and closed shutters or curtains on the sunny side, trapping the cooler night air inside and keeping the sun out. After sunset, when the outside air cooled, they opened the house up again to flush the day's warmth out and draw the cool in. Cross-ventilation, opening windows on opposite sides to let air flow straight through, was used to move a breeze when there was one.

Households also managed their own heat production. Cooking, especially baking and preserving, throws off a great deal of heat, so summer cooking was often done early, done outside, or done in a separate summer kitchen where one existed. No-bake and cold dishes had an obvious appeal in hot weather, which is part of why chilled desserts and cold meals were summer staples. Damp cloths, shaded rooms, and simply moving activity to the coolest part of the house all played their part.
