How did households stay cool before air conditioning?
Before mechanical air conditioning, households worked with the building and the daily heat cycle. In hot regions of the United States and elsewhere, they shut the house against daytime sun and opened it to night cool, used shade and ventilation to move air, and relied on design features built for climate: high ceilings, shutters, porches, thick walls, transoms. The core insight was simple. Keep the sun's heat out by day, and let cool air in when it arrives.
High ceilings let hot air rise above the occupied zone. Porches and eaves shaded walls and windows. Shutters stopped heat at the glass. Thick masonry slowed daytime heat gain and released it later. Cellars and north rooms stayed cooler and sheltered people and food. Daily habit did as much as design: close in the morning, open after sunset, pull a cross-breeze when possible, and cook early or outdoors when heat was extreme. Light-colored clothing, afternoon rest, and cool drinks were part of the same system.
Regional architecture encoded local knowledge. Dogtrot houses, shotgun houses, courtyard plans, and wraparound porches are different answers to the same problem of shade and air movement. A New England summer and a Gulf Coast summer called for different degrees of the same logic.
Cooking was a major indoor heat source. Historical summer kitchens, outdoor bake ovens, and cold meals were strategies for keeping the main living rooms bearable. Even without a separate summer kitchen, many households shifted heavy baking and boiling to early morning. Curtains and interior shutters did daytime work that modern blinds still do. A dark room behind closed shutters could feel several degrees kinder than a sun-struck parlor with glass fully exposed.
Water and shade outdoors mattered too. Trees on the west and south sides, vines on porches, and light-colored exterior surfaces reduced the heat that reached the walls. People moved through the day: cellars and porches at afternoon peak, bedrooms opened to night air later. Comfort was managed as a schedule, not only as a building.
Sleeping porches and shaded galleries in warmer American regions extended the same logic into the night. People moved their resting places toward air rather than expecting every interior room to perform equally in July.
Humidity and heat stress change the plan: when air is both hot and muggy, prioritize modern cooling for vulnerable people.
