Companion Planting: Sorting Evidence from Folklore
Which plant pairings are backed by biology, and which are folklore?
Companion planting means growing certain plants near one another for mutual benefit. The clearest working example is the Three Sisters, developed by the Haudenosaunee and other Indigenous nations of North America. Corn grows tall and gives beans a living pole. Beans host nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria that feed soil the corn depletes. Squash sprawls, shades soil, holds moisture, and suppresses weeds. Those benefits are structural, chemical, and ecological. Native Seeds/SEARCH and other Indigenous-led and seed-sovereignty organizations describe the system as agriculture, not as a folk tip list.
Beyond a few well-studied cases, elaborate pairing charts often mix sound observation, plausible theory, and claims copied from guide to guide until they sound like established fact. Some scent-based pest effects and shade pairings have support in specific conditions. Others have never been carefully tested. A chart that assigns a best friend and worst enemy to every vegetable should be read as a set of hypotheses, not as a law of nature.
What does hold up more broadly is diversity. Large blocks of one crop invite pests that find an easy buffet. Legumes improve nitrogen availability when nodulation works. Ground covers and living mulches affect moisture and weeds. Those mechanisms explain why some traditional pairings succeed without requiring every folklore pairing to be true.
Pest lore is where folklore multiplies fastest. A claim that one strongly scented herb will drive away every cabbage worm in the county rarely survives careful watching. Trap crops, which draw pests to a sacrificial planting, sometimes help in specific systems. Shade from taller crops can protect lettuce in heat. Those are conditional tools. They are not magic fences.
Spacing and soil still decide more harvests than friendship charts. Two plants that "like" each other will fail together in exhausted ground. The Three Sisters succeed because the architecture and nitrogen story are real, and because Indigenous growers refined the system in place over generations. Copy the structure with respect, and give corn enough season and fertility to carry the beans.
European and American garden writers borrowed, repeated, and sometimes distorted companion lore through the twentieth century. Separating Indigenous agricultural systems such as the Three Sisters from later hobby charts is part of reading that record honestly.

Diversity in the bed is usually wiser than a long enemies list on paper.
