Companion Planting: Sorting Evidence from Folklore
Some pairings of plants are backed by real biology. Others are tradition repeated until it sounded like fact. Here is how to tell them apart.
Companion planting is the practice of growing certain plants near one another for mutual benefit. Some of it is well supported. The best-known example, the Three Sisters of corn, beans, and squash grown together by Indigenous peoples of North America, works for reasons that hold up to scrutiny. Much of the rest, the long charts pairing this vegetable with that herb, is a mix of sound observation, plausible theory, and folklore passed along without evidence.
This entry keeps the two apart. The goal is not to dismiss traditional knowledge, which is often right, but to be honest about which claims are demonstrated and which are simply repeated.
A case that holds up: the Three Sisters
The Three Sisters is the clearest example of companion planting that genuinely works, and it is worth understanding why. The system originates with the Haudenosaunee and other Indigenous nations, who developed it over centuries and adapted it to many local environments.
Each plant does a real job. The corn grows tall and gives the beans a living pole to climb. The beans are legumes, and legumes host bacteria on their roots that fix nitrogen from the air into forms plants can use, returning fertility to soil that the heavy-feeding corn depletes. The squash sprawls across the ground, its broad leaves shading the soil, holding in moisture, and suppressing weeds. The benefits are structural, chemical, and ecological, and they can be observed and explained. This is companion planting on solid ground.
Where the evidence gets thinner
Beyond a handful of well-studied cases, the picture is much less certain.
Popular companion-planting guides often present elaborate tables of which plants help or harm each other, stated with a confidence the underlying evidence does not always support. Some pairings rest on real mechanisms that have been studied in specific conditions, such as strong-scented plants confusing certain pests, or tall plants sheltering shade-tolerant ones. Others trace back to a single old book, or to reasoning that sounds plausible but has never been tested, and then get copied from one guide to the next until they take on the appearance of established fact.
The honest position is that some companion effects are real, many are unproven, and a few are simply folklore. A responsible gardener treats the charts as hypotheses to try rather than laws to obey, which is very much in the spirit of how traditional kitchen gardeners actually worked: by observation and local experience.
Principles that are genuinely useful
Rather than memorize pairing charts, it helps to lean on the broader principles that do have support behind them.
Legumes improve soil nitrogen, which is why beans and peas earn their place near heavy feeders, as the Three Sisters shows. Diverse planting, mixing crops rather than growing large blocks of one, tends to make it harder for pests and diseases to spread, a well-established idea in ecology. Ground-covering plants conserve moisture and suppress weeds, as the squash does. And strongly aromatic herbs and flowers can influence which insects visit a bed, though the specifics vary and are easy to overstate.
These principles are reliable because they rest on understood biology rather than on tradition alone. They also happen to explain most of the companion pairings that actually work.
